Hello all, Sold my Oday 23 and now I am the new owner of a 1976 Oday 27. I'm new to inboard engines, however have read alot of threads, websites and discussions about Atomic 4's. Despite that, some lingering questions are worthy of asking of you, the friendly sailors. 1) My boat has two Type 27 batteries, how much recharging does an Atomic 4 give back to the batteries? Any spec on this? Anyone know where I can print an Atomic 4 manual too? 2)I have two Gemini compasses aboard, both are so clouded, it's almost impossible to read the compass itself, any recommendations on cleaning them? 3) The boat has Horizon knotmeter and Horizon depthsounder. The large circular ones, however west marine, boat us doesn't carry these. If I want relacement parts, manuals or questions, any website on these?? Thanks all! Mark R. 1976 Oday 27 (boat yet renammed) Green Bay, WI

The original Atomic4 manual is not worth the paper its written on. There is only ONE manual for the atomic-4: "Service & Rebuilding Manual for the Atomic-4" by Don Moyer available from www.moyermarine.com .... there is NO other manual that has any 'worth'. Don is the acknowledged "worlds 'guru'" of Atomic-4s. His website also has a forum on which you can pose questions for servicing, UPGRADES and 'modernizations' etc. :)

I agree with Rich

Moyer Marine is THE expert on A-4's. If your engine has not been upgraded as Moyer recommends (and can do) and if you are keeping this "new" boat for a while, it would well worth upgrading it. I had an old A-4 on an even older Columbia yrs ago and it required constant attention. If I had known about Moyer then, he would have put me back in love with that old engine.... Here are two places to explore for Horizon instruments and perhaps parts and discussion: http://www.standardhorizon.com/?cmd=DisplayProducts&DivisionID=3&ProdCatID=86 and http://app.infopia.com/Shop/Control/fp/user/Shop/Control/Product/fp/SFV/31475/vpid/2184292/vpcsid/0/rid/121368 The Horizon Products site above has some old manuals in their archives that you can search for. Finally, I've had some limited luck restoring clouded plastic with "StarBrite Plastic Scratch Remover (Step 1) and StarBrite Plastic Polish/Restorer (Step 2)." These products may help somewhat, but once plastic gets clouded (mostly from UV) it's only a matter of time before you need to replace it.

Not much help with your questions, but....

I had an O'Day 27 -- foot for foot the best boat I ever had. Marvelous balance, sails itself for hours at a time. Still miss it for its just plain great sailability. Congratualtions! Great choice!

RichH > funny you mentioned about the manuals, as I spent pretty much all day on the boat today, going through, gettin accustomed to the boat etc, I happened to find all the paper work, documentation on the boat. Amid the musty smelling paperwork, was an ORIGINAL "Medalist Universal Motors: Operation and Maintenance Manual for Atomic Four and Atomic Stevedore"!!! However I did check out the Moyer Marine, and without a doubt, was highly impressed. Will also buy their Atomic 4 manual. This Atomic 4 is set up for fresh-water cooling too. Learning as I go. Thanks much! Warren Milberg> thanks. I have checked out their site for Horizon. Guess I'll need to call them, want to get new covers for the Standard Horizon instruments. The Gemini compasses are another thing. Might take those off for repair and/or replacement of the globe. Eric Jones > Many thanks! I was looking at either this Oday 27 or a Catalina 27. Both were just the right size etc, however the Catalina siting at the marina where I'm docked at, isn't as nice. Plus, it needs work and I had already put tons of effort restoring my Oday 23. Didn't want that much work again. This Oday 27 had everything on it I want, so I'm happy. I've heard alot of good things about the Oday 27's! Pics will be coming sometime soon.

Welcome to O27 ownership

Mark R - Your 'new boat' enthusiasm is kindof infectious. The experience is a bit like falling in love (for a while, anyway). Hope your relationship with your ODay is lasting & happy. You might consider adding your name to the O'Day Owners directory on this site. Good luck with the new boat.

Mark, When the time comes to rename

your boat be sure that you do it right. This is not a time to anger the gods! There are many renaming ceremonies and I must confess that I am not familar with any but perhaps others here can advise you well. ;)

Congrats on your new boat

Now that you have an inboard engine, and are asking questions about alternators, it would be a good time to invest in Nigel Calder's Boatowner's Manual for Mech & Elec Systems, or at least one of Don Casey's electrical books (not just the basic one). You will be asking questions about electrical systems pretty soon, and these references will go a long way to helping you understand what it is you have, may want, and will need. Also try www.amplepower.com and download and read their Ample Power Primer. The West Marine Advisors are also good sources for electrical system information.
