Atomic 4 troubles?

Hi everyone, I just took my boat out of winter storage and started the engine up for the first time. It seems like the engine isnt running like it did last year. When the engine is in neutral it runs great and I can rev it up nicely. However, once I put it into gear the engine seems like its choking/putting. It still works, but im not getting much power out of it no matter how much throttle I give it.

Any ideas?

Two possible problems ..

1. Dirt accumulation on the emulsion tube inside the carburetor ... a small hollow needle-like device that controls the air/fuel ratio - easily cleaned. Is only active when the engine is under load drawing a LOT of air, is bypassed when the engine is at idle

2. Blown head gasket. A4 will run 'fine' in idle, but when load applied ... chokes, wont 'spin-up' to rpm and then chokes/sputters/then dies. Do compression test.

I had a similar probelm when I repacked my stuffing box. I tightened the box too tight and it was stalling the engine when I put it in gear.

Another thing to do is lookup Moyer marine on the web. Great resource. Call him, he will give you a lot of information.

If I recall correctly: In addition to RichH's suggestions, the other thing that can cause an old-tech, carbureted, mechanical-points internal combustion engine to behave like yours is a bad condenser.
