Today, when I tried to start my boat engine all I heard was a whine from the starter motor. It was running but not engaging the engine. Normally, this old engine runs VERY well starting instantly. I feel that the starter probably needs to be rebuilt BUT I have never removed it from the boat. Can anyone who has ever done this advise me as to its removal. Perhaps I could get some engine information like a copy of an Atomic 4 manual. I had one some years back but sadly it was stolen from my boar which is a 1961 Polaris Seafarer. Thanks in advance... TOM ;D

Hi Tom: Your starter is spinning but the solenoid is not engaging. Sometimes you can tap it with a hammer and make it work. It is a typical delco starter, you can get parts at the local auto parts store. Same applies for the prestolite starter if yours is that old. will

The solenoid is not engaging the starter gear with the flywheel. If you go to an automotive electrical repair shop, they can rebuild it for you. It may be hard to find one new or rebuilt on the shelf. It should only be held on by 2 bolts thru the flywheel housing. Be sure to disconnect the batteries before attempting to remove it. Then remove the wires from the starter solenoid and then the bolts holding the starter on.

thanks. I did take it to local starter/ generator shop and reinstalled with no problem. Thanks for your advice. By the way the shop told me that the former owner also had it rebuilt 10 years ago... TOM
