I am considering a sailboat that has an Atomic 4 engine. I have no problems with the engine in the boat. I have a question for those that have experience with the engine.

It is a 30HP Atomic. The engine and the transmission have recently been rebuilt. Runs awesome. Less than 50 hours since the rebuild. Putting it in neutral is very precise. Is there a cable adjustment or something that makes neutral easier to "find"? Never seen such a tight window.

Sounds to me like the reverse band is adjusted too tight and engaging reverse too soon. You have to take the cover off the transmission. I would recommend backing off one flat of the nut at a time. Better yet, reading up on the adjustment procedure will probably better help you understand what you are doing. It's really quite easy if you have access.

Thank you,

I will look for the manual and see if I can read up on it.

Check the atomic four community forum at www. Moyermarine. Com. Also,
Don Moyer's Atomic 4 Manual (about $48) is worth every penny.

About $ forty eight for the manual. Have no idea how the emoticon ended up on the previous post....

My experience with our Atomic 4 is that neutral is pretty hard to find. Forward gear clicks in with what they call a 'detente' but neutral has no such indicator. Reverse gear creates a kind of whining sound. Neutral on my boat is slightly towards reverse.
Often you may think you are in neutral and the prop is still spinning in fwd, although not really fast. It takes some getting used to.
I figured this out after running our boat on the hard. Thought I was in neutral but observers on the ground said differently. I was then able to figure out how to adjust my shift lever so there was little or no spin in the axle.
The A4 is a good engine for folks who are not afraid to have a look under the hood and like doing their own engine maintenance.
The folks at the Moyer Marine forums are a pretty amazing bunch of people and can help you with any kind of problem or repair: http://www.moyermarine.com/forums/index.php
Neutral is just hard to find at first. That's my take.

In my experance it makes a noise IF it it is a bit in forward or reverse SO i just listen for the quite spot and as i am by the stern its pretty easy to see any prop wash

Thank you,

How do you adjust the shift lever? I am assuming you are just adjusting where the lever sits on the gear so it is at the 12:00 position for neutral?

You just find a happy point as there is no netural detent in the system its really not that hard when you get use to how it works

Finding neutral on the A4 takes a little getting used to, especially if you're used to the well-defined click of the shift lever on an outboard. The Moyer Marine manual is worth the money and there's an operating manual in pdf format on the Alberg 30 owners website that can be downloaded. The Moyer Marine A4 forum is also an excellent resource.
