Atomic 4 problem

I have recently purchased a 27' with an Atomic 4 gas engine. I replaced the gas but have twice experienced the engine failing after 15 minutes of forward motion. The engine will idle at the dock for 30+ minutes but quits and will not restart when underway. I thought that prior to dismantling fuel lines etc someone may have experienced the same problem. Coil, fuel pump?? We met a very nice Catalina couple today who towed us back to port. Thanks

Atomic Four problems

I own a 83 Catalina 27. I have experience the same problem, and when I replaced the gas fuel filter it went away. Make sure you get the proper filter as identified in the engine manual. If you have additional problems, there is a great website that I use called www.moyermarine.com that does nothing but solve Atomic 4 problems. Give it a try and check the Q&A section. Most likely someone else has experienced same problem, and the answer is on the website.Captain Chuck

Tank vent

I don't own an Atomic 4, but I've seen similar problems occur when the fuel tank is closed or blocked. After running for some time your engine has burned fuel, emptying the tank. If the tank doesn't have a working vent, a vacuum is created, and the engine is starved of fuel, shutting it down. While idling at the dock, the engine doesn't burn much fuel, and will run a long time. Away from the dock, under load, the engine burns more fuel, and shuts down sooner. Left for a long enough period of time, the vacuum in the tank will disappear, allowing a re-start. Check your tank vent, vent hose, etc. for a blockage. A clogged fuel filter, as mentioned by another poster, will cause your engine to shut down, too.Randy

Aloha I have an A-4 in my Catalina 27 Once I had the smme thing ran great in port but when I when I gave it gas it would die. I found water in the carborator.----- something to check another time it was a condenser After about 15 mintues the thing would stop but it would start back up If I can be any help email me jl.shipyard@verizon.net
