Atomic 4 issue

my Catalina 27 has an Atomic 4 late model in. I went ahead and purchased a spacer that you can fit between the intake manifold and carburetor to eliminate odors that are given out by the crank case vent hole. After instalation the RPM are higher. I tried to adjust the Idle Mixture to reduce the RPMs but no luck there. Another issue is that when i try to put in forward or reverse the engine dies. In order to start the engine even when warm I need to choke it which is not what was happening before this instalation. Has anyone installed one of these after market fittings, and if so has it created any problems? Any ideas will help. Thank you.

You most likey changed a few things...

You may have blocked off a carb passage in the manifold. You insulated the carb from any heat from the manifold, and you may have by moving the position of the carb, messing up any carb linkage adjustments such as throttle or choke positions. Good luck.

another thought...

You may have stirred sediment in the carburetor bowl and that could be causing problems.

Idle speed

Both those symptoms sound like an air leak to me. Probably caused by your modification.

Higher idle, Hard starting

The higher idle speed, the need to choke to start, and lack of power causing the engine to die when engaging the transmission are all indications that the air fuel mixture is too lean. The inability to adjust the mixture is an indication that the carb needs maintenance or as Landsend said the spacer created other issues. I would try to correct the problem by first removing the spacer. If that resolves your issuse at least some possibilities are eliminated. Good luck, please keep us updated. Dennis W. S/V FullSailed

Definitely an air leak .....

REcheck the connection to that 'sniffer tube' to be sure that you dont have an air leak. The function of that sniffer-tube is simply to remove any 'drips' of liquid gasoline that fall down into the entrance of the updraft carburator.... otherwise (when not sucking free gasoline) the sniffer tube ADDS a bit of air to the mixture in the venturi section of the carb. Suggest you get a copy of Don Moyers "Maintenance and Rebuild Manual - Atomic 4". Will SAVE you $$$$$ in troubleshooting and repair. www.moyermarine.com hope this helps.
