Atomic 4 Issue

I'm having issues with my Atomic 4. It runs well in neutral and OK in reverse but has low RPMs in forward. It had been sitting for a few years when I bought it recently. I cleaned and rebuilt the carb, changed the gas, ( premium - no ethanol ) got a new fuel filter, dumped the separator bowl, etc.
anyone else have a similar issue? Any ideas?

Back in the 50's my dad had a boat w/ the A-4 , and I learned engine mechanics from it. With declining performance, valve clearance setting, new plugs, and a thorough rehab of the primitive ignition distributor that usually did the trick - points, condenser, ignition timing and advance system - failed to help. A compression test showed low pressure in all cylinders.

Fortunately this was due to pitted/corroded valves rather than piston rings, as oiling the cylinders through the spark plug holes failed to improve the pressure, pointing to valve problems. My removal of the cylinder head and a maybe $50 machine shop valve re-grinding/lapping job brought her back to vigor. The removal/re-installation was pretty straightforward as I recall it. But with a mechanic, $1000 today?
