I'm having trouble starting my Atomic 4 Engine, the seller replaced points and sparkplugs but seems like he did not know about gaps. I found out that sparkplug gap is 0.035 but could not find out how much to gap the points. Also, can anybody point me to the right direction of where I can acquire a technical manual on this engine. Any input would be appreciated.

Atomic 4

1) The clearance for the distributor point gap is 0.018-0.020 (magnito breaker point is 0.014-0.018) 2) Seacraft Publications Ltd 55 Charles St. W. Ste. 1404 Toronto, Canada, M5S 2W9 I recently replaced my plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and points without correctly setting the point gap. The engine ran like a vibrator (Poorly) I the reset the points gap correctly and she runs like a sewing machine.(perfectly) Good luck, Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan

Thanks for your quick and very helpful response. I bought a catalina because of other owners support. I will get the technical manual and try out those gaps that you provided.

several sources

There are atomic 4 web sites you can look at for information and parts. There is also a very good manual that (featherman? wrote). Best of all there is an atomic 4 group at www.sailnet.com that you can join and get on the email list. This is a major free resource for the atomic 4. Richard

Atomic 4 Engine and Manual

I, too, have a 1977 Atomic 4 gas engine. Since buying the boat last May, I have had the best luck buying parts from Old Lyme Marina in Old Lyme, Connecticut (860/434-1272 = ask for service). I don't know if it's the same book, but they sold me an excellent Atomic 4 technical manual. It allowed me (a virtual mechanical idiot) to rebuild my carburetor.
