On my 1981 C30, the choke is open (run) when the choke knob in the cockpit is pulled out. This seems backwards. I'm assuming that the choke is open when the valve on the carberator is turned counter-clockwise (right?). My choke cable runs stright back to the cockpit. As a result, when I pull the choke knob, the valve rotates counter-clockwise. Is this wrong? Should I route it forward then loop it back to the control knob? Or, maybe the arm on the choke valve can be switched so that pulling aft will close the choke instead of opening it. Any suggestions will be of help. My shifer is the single lever type. The transmission and throtle are controlled with the same lever. It works OK, but I notice that everyone else has a two lever control. Any ideas on switching over? is there really a need? How much will it cost and where can I get the two lever unit?

Choke

Hey Steve - My choke operates the same way - out for open, in for closed. My A-4 is so dependant on the choke for cold starts that I have no doubt that these are the proper positions. I recall a diagram in the owner's manual that showed the operation of the choke valve in the carbuerator. If you don't have yours, there is a website I can point you to that has it posted, along with some neat history of the little beasts. Can't help you with the trans/throttle lever. I have only seen the two-stick type. Best of Luck! Rob

"Manual" chokes . . .

We are both showing our age, but manual chokes like the ones that used to be on automobles worked the same way. "Pull out the choke," was a common refrain at that time. Your setup is correct. Nick

Atomic 4 choke

I have a 1982 C30 with the atomic 4. My choke works exactly like you think yours should. Pull out to choke, and push in to run. My carb is on the port side and the choke lever is on the port side of the carb. The choke cable is connected to the end of the butterfly arm which points down toward the bottom of the boat from the butterfly shaft. This means that when you pull the choke out, the lever moves toward the stern of the boat with the butterfly shaft moving counter-clockwise if your looking at it while facing to the starboard. Hope this helps.

A4 Choke

HI, I owned #1479 (yr 1979) until last Apr. The choke lever is pulled out to start when cold, pushed in after it starts and is warm. Happy sailing, Bill P
