I can understand your trepidation if you think your life is at stake. However, I need to point out that the use of a climbing harness when going aloft is the safest and(excuse the expression) most idiot proof method. While aloft there is no way to fall unless the dedicated climbing line breaks(and that is why you take a safety line with you). You cannot fall out of the harness even if you have a heart attack or knock yourself unconscious. Even in an upside down position(which would be near impossible to achieve) you cannot fall out.

This may be overkill but when it comes to climbing the mast, you can't be too safe. When I have to go up, I wear my climbing harness and start up with the ascenders on a dedicated line. I also wear my sailing chest harness and have that clipped in to the spinnaker halyard which my wife basically "belays" from down on deck as I move up the mast.
