Quite a feat. My hat's off to him. In the end it's mental toughness that carries the day. I've read many accounts of these types of voyages and they fascinate me. There are guys who have crossed the Atlantic is little more than refrigerators. And for some worthwhile reading find any books about Howard Blackburn out of Gloucester MA. Amazing stuff!

Sailing a 16' boat across the Atlantic is an adventure and an accomplishment but doing it twice is insane.

Perhaps not as insane if you are prepared and have contingencies planned.

This is an adventure I would love the opportunity of having.

Any more crazy than going over Niagara Falls in a barrel? People do all kinds of crazy stuff for publicity.

If you folks love that, here is the guy I believe still holds the record. How in blazes do you even stretch out in a 10 foot boat? http://www.amazon.com/Alone-Against-Atlantic-Marlin-Bree/dp/0898935067
I've read this book.

It is EXCELLENT. He build the boat in his garage.... the entire time with the intention of sailing across the Atlantic. He does a great job of helping the reader walk through the decision making processes that he undertook as he designed and built this boat.

He also writes about the "sea trials" he conducted in a lake in Wisconsin with some very interesting lessons learned and he spent many many hours trying to figure out how to store all of the stuff he was going to need. That part alone makes it worth reading.

He left from Norfolk and sailed to England.

... and on the subject of some good sailing books....

I was in a bookstore recently and found this in the used book pile...

Started thumbing through it and before I knew it... I was at the checkout lane. It is an excellent read. A true story about about a life long live-a-board with an obsession of pushing himself to greater and greater adventures. He eventually decides he wants to winter over in the Arctic circle.

I'm half way through it and so far it has been a great find.

Gary doesn't hold the record though. Hugo Vihlen does, aboard his 5'11" April Fool. Casablanca to Florida in 1968.

The boat is in the Newport maritime museum

What dee heck? What's next, someone balancing on a wine cork with a washcloth? That is some serious hardcore record breaking.

But wait until you get to the part where he describes getting into a stride right behind a polar bear. Tell me if you believe him ... I didn't!

Overall, though, I was fascinated.

I'm at the part where he was hallucinating. Maybe he just dreamed that part up... :Liar:
