Yolung whippersnappers!

Jeez guys! All you people in your fifties worried about getting too old to run a sailboat? I'm 73 but when I'm out on that boat with a twenty knot breeze making hull speed with 15 degrees of heel, I am 18 again. With rope clutches, winches and windlass (main concession to tender loving care of my back) I can still single-hand our O'Day 37 and expect to be able to long after the mortgage is paid off in another five years. The only thing is I don't pretzelize as well as I used to and occasionally need some young whippersnapper with more supple joints than mine to go into tight places and fix things. There is a lot of research showing that those who stay active generally have better health longer so that they can enjoy staying active longer. Not for me the park bench and newspaper wrapped in scarves and woolies. The scarves and woolies and long johns come in handy in the cockpit on brisk early spring or late autumn days with time to read the papers after the day's sailing is done, hot toddy or whatever in hand. Prehaps a virgin or two also.

At our club we have 'Woody', who turned 100 last August. The club planned a birthday party for him several months in advance. He has a nice old Tartan 27 called Woodynymph that he sails pretty regularly here on the River. Woody also participates in every 'all-hands' work day, sweeping, raking, warping dock lines, or carrying an end of whatever you pick up. His indefatigable good humour and positive mental attitude make it no wonder. The club initiated a longevity trophy, named after him, for the racing sailor with the highest score under a formula which is basically years with the club + age + races sailed in. Woody's score is something like 165. If he even enters a race he wins the trophy. The next runner-up has about 20 races or years of club membership to catch up to him. JC 2
