I think it must have been ten years ago when I first read of his plans to do this. In that length of time he should have made some wonderful observations of the behavior of the sea and the fish and animals in it and the birds that hunt for food in it.

Most impressive!!! I wonder if Reid actually built the vessel from the ground up, or just re-fit it? If he did, 70', wow this guy rocks!!!

Assuming he was not a Loony Tune when he left on the voyage, he would either be a Loony Tune when he got back or perhaps the most sane man on the planet. ;)

Spending that much time alone at sea could either make you crazy or be very therapudic. Joshua Slocum seemed to rather like the solitude of sailing alone, whereas Robin Lee Graham seemed to grow tired of it after a while and at least to my knowlege never went on another solo voyage.

This guy seems to like it and it sounds like he is going to go on sailing... Interesting story... thanks for posting

After skimming through the website, I think you would have a tough time finding a more hard core sailor than this guy. Simply amazing accomplishment.

Still... I can't imagine sailing around the world and never getting off the boat. If I were to ever consider it, it would be to see as much of the world as possible and meet the people on a level that no common tourist can. That would be the fun of such a voyage for me.

many of the whaling voyages were away from home port for three years or more. Most of that time would have been spent at sea.

Right on Ross!

This is not sailing. It's simply a way to try and make a name for yourself. To sail for a record as being the youngest, the longest, slimest, fatest, oldest or whatever just rates up there as seeking a record for the greatest self indulged ego.
If you seek fame then sail to advance the sport, improve the safety of the craft or any other worthy improvement to this adventure. Rather than to glorify your name ......sail for the advancement of those that will follow.

I'm not defending the guy, but that video has nothing to do with the voyage. I think he must have made that video when he was going through some kind of "Phase" of his life. :)

If you go to the website I posted it has much more detailed information about the voyage. I don't know the guy, but if you read a little deeper into the whole story he seems rather sincere, if not a little different... ;)

it is an interview on NPR and it has Reid Stowe, his girlfriend, and a guy form "Sail" magazine. Pretty interesting stuff.

Draw your own conclusions... I'm listening to it right now and it is pretty interesting. Time to pour another... :)

The ship held up remarkably well, despite being hit by another boat after just 15 days at sea, and having its sails torn during a close encounter rounding Cape Horn. The rent sails kept him from being able to sail into the wind the duration of the journey.



WTH.^^^^^^..????...how can you sail like that around the world..???
