Asymmetrical Spinnaker for B331?

Got a line on a used Hood asymmetrical spinnaker off a Pearson 34. The "I" length on the Pearson is about 3 ft longer than on the B331 (44' vs 41').

Here are the specs for the Spinnaker:
  • Foot 25.2*ft (7680mm)
  • MidGirth 25.2*ft (7680mm)
  • Area 944*ft2 (87701mm2)
  • Stay 44.09*ft (13438mm)

Anyway I could make this work?

Thanks cw

For my B323, Doyle made an 'A' for me out of .75 nylon. 661 sq ft.

It measures 42 x 37 x 19'8". The I of the boat is 42.67- 13006mm.

Doesn't sound like your "deal" will work?

I disagree. As long as you are within 10%, should be ok.

It depends. The just as long as the luff is not longer than your forestay length. If it is, the sail will not work nearly as well close reaching. But with the 2 foot difference, I'm guess OK.

If its a smokin' deal, hard to loose.

I'm interested in knowing how the sail works for you. We have a B331 on the Chesapeake also. Did you install another halyard? The US Spars rep at the Annapolis boat show said it might be a challenge due to the reinforcements at each spreader. He suggested removing the mast.... not interested in that!.

Hey Ron
Steve @ M yacht services claimed he could thread it through. I guess I will test him. Picked up sail yesterday.

My 331 had messenger line (1/8th line) pre-installed by Beneteau. it was tied to a big washer at the top where the halyard comes out. also for the pole lift. maybe Maybe I was lucky. Sure made it easy to thread through.

Hey Craig,
Thanks for the input.
My messenger lines are still intact, but very frayed. Although he claims he has never needed them, hopefully the rigger will be able to use them to speed up the process.

Asymmetric spinnaker sizes

CWoody:
Here's what you need to know:
The hypotenuse of the I and J is about 42feet even...so this is about the forestay length.Your sail will probably fly with a sock(?) and if so, this adds another foot or so to the luff length.
At Neil Pryde we make our cruising asym's about 5% smaller than the max hoist...as we design them to fly up and away from the bow...unlike a racing asym (think Melges 24) which the luff of the sail is the length of the forestay and some. At 44' this sail would be 5% longer than the forestay...as a result you won't have any visibility under the spinnaker when sailing AND gybing will most certainly be more difficult, more so in light air.
The other problem is the width of the kite. This would make it about a 200% spinnaker (170% being the most common size for cruising kites) and as a result the sail will overlap the mainsail a lot...and you will find it doesn't reach well and suffers downwind because it will be more easily blanketed by the main.

I would not buy the sail with a luff of 44, nor a foot of 25.2. The sail will be TOO BIG to fly effectively.

Hope this helps!

Re: Asymmetric spinnaker sizes

Thanks for input Bob. Always great hearing from you.
I am at least going forward with rigging the Spin Halyard. What size mast head swival block do you recomend for this application.

I don't think you'll need one using a sock.
