Has anyone set up an asymmetrical spinnaker for their Hunter 31? Did you have to set up a block at the top of mast or where you able to use the open sheave on the port side of the mast? I did check through the archives. Nothing listed. Thanks

Spinnaker Rigging

I did one on my h34 which is a similiar vessel. Initially I tried using the spare jib halyard with some success. I found after a few uses that my new halyard had excessive wear from chafe at the sheave exit. The sail flexed and rotated when being used causing the chafe. Mine had a ring on the masthead that I ended up adding a block to which fixed this problem. I also had a block at the bow so the foot was adjustable.

H31 Spinnaker

Our used '87 H31 came with spinnaker halyard and symetrical spinnaker. Since its usually just two of us sailing I decided to go the sock/ATN tack route. I rigged a line from the tack aft to the cockpit so I'm able to control the height of the tack. I've never found it necessary to use a spinnaker pole. Works fine for us and I haven't noticed any excessive wear on the halyard or the sail after about 6 "flights".

Where you able to run the halyard from the external block that you set up down through the internal spare halyard block and through the mast? Thanks Steve

Daryl Where you able to run the halyard from the external block that you set at the top of the mast over to the spare internal spare halyard sheave so you could run your halyard through the mast? Thanks Steve

I ran an external Halyard

I considered trying to use there spare jib halyard but got lazy and never tried it. Seems to me the mast exit was too low for the block I added to the ring up there. That block could slide on the ring and I figured there would still be some chafe on the line as it moved around. I had a spare line on the boat and did it the easy way. I also wanted to insure there was no conflict with the jib furling hardware.
