Yea, it probably is showing ....

Earlier I said that flying a chute is the height of sailing. Well, .... passing another boat under sail is always good too, and ESPECIALLY if they have to give you time!!! Yea!!! How sweet it is! So, how many seconds do they dock you in your PHRF rating? The sheaves at the base of my mast are full-up but maybe with some re-'wireing' I could free one up. You don't happen to remember what the height of the mast is above the forestay? Around 6-feet or so? So that would make it about a 48-ft hoist?

John

I've got a total hit of 18 seconds off my base rating. 6 for the keel and 12 for the sprit/akite. My base was 144 so that leaves me at 126. I regularly beat boats like C&C 38 which rates 102 and X99 rating 114 I have my deck setup with four mast base blocks on each side running back to a cabin top quad clutch pac on each side. To port I have port genoa 1, cunningham, pole foreguy and pole lift. To stbd main halyard, genoa 2, spin 1, and spin 2. Outhaul is on the bottom of the boom and vang line is just dropped into the companionway over the traveler. Backstay adjuster is adjustable from either side using the lazy primary winch. Tack line for akite runs on cabin top back to a clutch for cabin-top winch access. If you're thinking about a masthead spinnaker I would suggest you install a jumper strut also. This gives the needed support to the upper mast section as well as much improved headstay tension when the backstay adjuster is cranked on. As I recall(?) the masthead "I" is 48.5'. The sprit adds 5.5' to the standard "J" making 17.6'.

They gave me a rating of 123

Alan - years ago I had some thoughts about racing and the Handicapper for our area gave me a rating of 123. I don't know what the base rating was but this was for a full spinnaker, feathering prop, and a shoal draft keel. Several knowledgeable people said "he didn't do me no favors" and I believed them. Never renewed my membership as a result. If I went with a masthead chute I definitely would use a jumper strut like the 35.5 cup boats but finding out the installation details would probably be difficult, especially for the little spreader thing. My mast currently has four exit blocks at the base but they're currently full but maybe I could free one of them up by adding a block at the base. There are a couple bales there but it's hard finding a block that works nicely on them. With an "I" of 48.5 that would be an additional 6.5 feet over the stock 42 feet. NICE! Definitely something to think (a lot) about.
