I have always cruised and raced sailboats that didn't have a spinnaker. I am now thinking about adding an asymetrical spinnaker to my boat,in addition,to the oversized roller furling sail for better light air sailing. Any advice on how they work and sail on a 310 would be appreciated.

Before I bought my 310 I had a Islander 30. When I sold it I took the crusing spinaker with me. I've used it a couple of time here. It is a little small but really makes a difference in light air. Buy one and enjoy it. I bought mine from an classified ad in Sailnet..com.

Alternative

You might consider just adding a whisker pole to your existing roller-furling Gennie. It improves the off-wind performance, and its one less sail to carry/set/etc. Unless you really want a spinnaker to play with. --Ron

Works great, costs a bunch.

David: I bought the asymetrical spinnaker for my 310 when I first bought the boat. You need the following - spinnaker, sheets, dousing sock (I bought ATM and the tacker), padeyes (installed aft of primary winches), and turning blocks. Only the dousing sock is optional, but, really necessary if you want to encourage use of the spinnaker. It does work great, but quite honestly, I have not used it often enough on Lake Erie to make it worth the expense. If I had it to do over, I would go with Ron's suggestion of the whisker pole for my 150 genoa. Relative cost about $700 vs $2000. However, the spinnaker is beautiful and it is a real rush when she goes up and fills. Wow is the operative word. I just don't get too many wows. Another issue is that the spinnaker in the sock is 40 ft long and occupies most of the front half of the port cockpit locker. Removing the spinnaker from the locker and taking it throough the boat and out of the forward hatch is a scene from a Chinese parade.

Thanks

Thanks to all who have responded so far. I have checked prices for new sails and I have been quoted between 1500 and 2000 dollars for the a. spinnaker. The pole is a great idea but since I am beginning to race the 310 I need something that will help me point in light air. Thanks again for responding. I will keep looking for a used sail if I can find one.

Cruising Spinaker

David, You may want to take a look at what Lee Sails has to offer. I have a quote for a cruising spinaker including dousing sock for about $1000 that I am thinking about for my C310. The sails are made in Hong Kong, but they have dealers all over the United States. The WEB address is www.leesails.com Good luck. Matt C310 #127 La Paz
