Greetings,all O'Day 222 owners from Nova Scotia, Canada!
Is there an alternative to the factory installed main/boom
sheet system? The present arrangement seem to place too
much stress on the back stay??

The answer to your question is yes. Mount a traveler near the companionway hatch and mount the main sheet boom strap about 33" in, from the very end of the boom. You can leave the triangular plate on your back stay, or remove it as I have done. In fact, what I did was; I bought a used Johnson Handy-Lock at Rig-Rite, and had them install it on my back stay under the open turnbuckle. By leaving the turnbuckle on the back stay, this allows me to remove the back stay from the small hole in the mast cap. The Handy-Lock is like a back stay adjuster, but I only use this gadget to throw slack into my fore stay for mast raising/lowering. I might also add that I have a CDI Roller furler with a push button quick pin, and I'm still able to connect or disconnect it without any problems. Also, I never need to touch my side stay turnbuckles. The Handy-Lock does it all. Hand-Locks are kind of pricey, but there are other lever adjusters out there that can do the job just as well. I'll be honest with you. A traveler mounted in front of the companionway hatch can be a pain in the butt. You'll need to step over it each time you go in and out of the cabin, and the First Mate won't be able to sit in the corner and use the bulkhead for a back rest. On the other hand, the car can be moved to one side or the other and allow you to get your gear in and out of the cabin, plus you will be able to stand at the helm and motor off without the boom hitting you in the face. If you do decide to go with a traveler, buy a good one like Garhaurer or Harken. I kick myself for not buying a Garhaurer.

I also rigged a mid-boom traveler system on my 222.
I chose not to block the bridge deck with a 'beam for the traveler.
I used Harken jamb-blocks. It's a comprimise but is a great improvement.
I'll try to insert a photo of it if I figure out how to do that!
