Don't bother

Ron, You'll find many people who say it can be done, and they're right. It CAN be done but whether you WANT to do it in a C30 is a completely different story. Catalinas are NOT bluewater boats. You would have to significantly upgrade the boat just to make it seaworthy enough to make several ocean crossings and then you wouldn't have a comfortable ride cuz of it's design. It was designed to be a comfy coastal cruiser not a world traveler! That said, the C30 is a very nice boat to learn on. Stick with it till you get enough experience to know what you want in a bluewater boat. LaDonna

Define Holding Up

Could you do it? ...Probably....the odds are that the boat would hold up better than you......Is it optimally designed for it?...Well IMHO not as well as some other boats....somethings alone are storage and water holding, etc.....comfort...etc There was an older Catalina 27 was sailed around the world by someone (Childress?) in his 20's.....Some modifications were done to his boat..nothing too major...... If you are determined and skilled enough you could probably sail around the world sitting in an empty oil drum and holding a poncho on a paddle over your head for a sail. But you would probably not enjoy it and no one will recommend you necessarily give it a try. ;-).........

coastal

I have a cat 30 and plan on sailing the caribbean in it. It has already been there twice and handled it well. The question is what do you want to do. Spend weeks offshoare or sail and see the world. You can spend years exploreing the caribbean and south america with out ever haveing to make a major crossing. Just look into what you need to make the boat comfortable and safe in the conditions you will face. I am presently on Lake Lanier but will be moveing my boat to the coast next fall.
