Around the world non-stop in a 22 footer

@Bosman will like this, a Pole just completed a solo non-stop lap crossing the major capes. In a 22 foot boat. That quite the trick, and it set a new record for smallest boat to accomplish the feat.

The boat is the Polish-built Maxus 22, and of course that's great publicity. The rub is that the boat was so extensively modified to make the trip that many have noted that it would have been cheaper, easier, faster and better to buy an ocean-rated boat to start with (Django 6.70 anyone?). But if you have a builder willing to sign up, why not?

I can see several obvious mods made for safety and strength. Who else? Shout 'em out!

Liking the boom angle. Not sure what practical application that serves, but on a loose footed sail you just need that outhaul attachment. The rest is kinda wasted structural componant.

Yep thats the big one. that greatly reduces the risk from compression forces on the mast from the boom. Lots of the ocean racers are set up this way. Makes a traditional vang impossible, but the boat is not designed for upwind work anyway. Most will use a combi preventer/vang if needed.

Good one. Probably for simplicity and reliability. In any case the jib on a 22 footer is tiny and easy to manage. And I'm guessing he left it up 99% of the time.

I saw that and was impressed as well but then recalled my experiences.

The furlers on small boats are not that reliable imo. Larger boats have unobtainium bearing races wrapped in buckyball fiber shell and high strength no stretch running lines with those furlers.

Small boats that size have phukit tolerances on parts and materials, and phukit lifecycle testing. If there are issues, call a tow or buy a new part.

There looks to be a baby stay supporting the mast going to the middle of the fore deck. The red jib sheets are going around it and it is casting a shadow on the jib.

Yep. Keeps the mast from pumping. Note the reinforcing sleeve on the mast, and the 4:1 block to tension it up.
