I was thinking that if I installed a slight venturi around my outboard prop, would it increase my forward thrust by some percentage? Has anyone tried this? If so is it worth the effort?

Probably Not

the thrust ultimately depends on the diameter of the prop, the pitch, power and rpm's of the engine. When you instal the Venturi around it it may improve your directional maneuverability, but not the thrust. One thing that I really liked on may boat , long time ago when I had a small power boat , was the instalation of an aerofoil wing, just above the prop. It improved the planning speed and ability to "get out of the hole", especially if the boat is loaded with weight. Hope this helps....

Might Help

It might help, but not necessarily from the venturi. There is a vortex that is created at the tips of the blades. This is wasted energy. A shroud will reduce this vortex. This is similar to the little vertical winglets that they use on airplanes. You might have seen aircraft when they are taking off or landing. If there is sufficient moisture in the air, you can sometimes see the vortexes.

Outboard prop

Either one will protect your rudder from the prop, which is enough to warrant the installation IMHO

Power Thruster is the name of

this item sold by OB dealers & others. I also would like to see a review of this gizmo by users rather than dealers. go to "shop.catalinaowners.com" click on "trailer sailors" click on "Power Thruster for Sailboat outboards" The dealers claim fantastic improvement in fuel economy, thrust etc. This model has foils to improve planeing & is for dingies & inflatables but I have seen others for sailboats. I plan to make one from SS or Al. Regards, Bob B.

power

I have a power thruster on my 10hp Honda o/b. It helps alot with directional control, but I don't think it makes much different as far as speed or economy goes.

PVC Drain Pipe

We were talking almost a year ago abou trying out some of that green PVC pipe to see if it made a difference. Have not heard back if anyone actually tried it yet.
