There's a chance that I will be transfered to Phoenix and will be taking my Catalina 30 with me. The question is; what lakes should I be looking at?

Think San Diego

Ted: I think you had better think about San Diego as an alternative. Most of the lakes in the AZ area are best equipped to handle trailer sailors. I have known a few AZ sailors and most of them are making the trip to the coast.

There is a considerable influx of folks

from Arizona in San Diego in the Summer (bad time to be in Phoenix) whom are affectionately known locally as ZONIES. Might think of Oceanside, Dana Point, Newport Beach as well. Try checking our local boating newspaper The Log, they have guides to different marinas in California. The 2 lakes near Phoenix are Canyon Lake and Roosevelt Resevoir which is pretty big but I think you'd get to know them lakes way too well in a short time.

Yep, I'd be thinking about going to the coast unless you like motoring in circles and looking at rocks a lot! Jon

Lake Pleasant in AZ or San Carlos in MX

The nearest and best supported lake in Phoenix is Lake Pleasant. The marina is nice, there is a club with handicapped racing and a 30' is not too big, in fact it's just about right. There is a sailboat shop on premises and a dry storage lot if you are on a trailer. BUT ... I feel the best deal is South, to Sunny Mexico and San Carlos on the Sea of Cortez. Se habla usted espanol? re/ol' Dave's comments, for information about Arizona Yacht Club, go to www.arizonayachtclub.org Unless your C 30 is on a trailer and easy to launch, suggest you check to see if Pleasant Harbor Marina has an available slip before you make the move if you are interested in making that your main port. Most of the boats in AYC regattas are 27 ft or less. Dick
