I saw the deep south sailing video and sure made me warm up while I am stuck up here in the cold northeast. I am heading south in a few days to sunny warm florida. Do you cold northern sailor's get a pick me up when you see these southern sailor's sailing around sunny warm weather while you are stuck on the hard cold snow waiting for spring. I look at my warm sailing photo's to help me feel good, what do you do to feel good. Nick

Not sailing today

It was 52 here when I crawled out of bed this morning. Pretty darn cold for Naples. I am on the water so it was warmer. Tomorrow they say it may hit 34 degrees. High today predicted is 56. A low of 34 is the coldest on record for Naples on that date. Brrrrrr By the weekend we should be getting the upper 70's and low 80's again. People are wearing long winter coats while walking by on their morning walks. I guess it is all relative. Last weekend we were on the boat and beach with grandkids in the water and highs in the mid 80's.

Terry, This morning I broke the ice in the birdbath

but it has refrozen now. The birds will just have to drink from the creek.

Light Snow

It's snowing very lightly right now and hoping to get out of NY before any storms trap us here. Were heading down to port charlotte on friday so all that cold weather should be gone by the time we arrive. Looking forward to wearing shorts again. Nick

Geesh, here in Minnesota

we'd be happy to see 19 degrees!!! The temp was 5 below when I left for work today. To stay warm in these cold winters I like to look at all my pictures and video from our sailing trips from the past year. We always plan a week in the Florida Keys to bask in the sun and bang around Florida Bay in the sunfish. I spend the rest of the time planning boat projects and wishing for spring to come early,

This Coming Weekend looks Good

This coming weekend looks like highs in the 50s and 60s with low on Saturday night in the 40's.. We will probably spend the night at the dock where we have power for a little heater and sail Saturday and Sunday. This time of year is great in Northern Alabama if you like birds. Plenty of birds around that come from the north. Everywhere yo look there are hawks sitting looking for a meal. Then all of the water birds around Wheeler Wildlife refuge. We might take the kayaks and paddle around the refuge for a few hours to look at all of the sandhill cranes and maybe a few eagles. Thousands of coots and cormorants. The biggest down side of winter sailing is that the days are short. Instead of sailing to 7 or 8 it is dark about 5. I sure wish that we were down south so that winter would be even more enjoyable.....maybe south of Cuba or the Yucatan???? Maybe winter of 2009 we can just forget winter and have an endless summer. Way back years ago in the air force I had a year without winter...well it got down into the 70's a few nights. I didn't miss the snow and ice at all!!!! Went swimming around christmas and didn't get cold!!! This was an outdoor pool...it was a little cooler than the sea but still very comfortable. Yes winter 2009 I want to be someplace where the locals don't even have a heavy coat.

SoCal is nice this time of year...

But we have a storm bringing a low pressure system. Yesterday I was at the boat but it was too windy to go out solo, at least with my experience level. Even a couple of old timers stayed in the marina because of the high winds. The marina was very noisy with all the clanging and slapping of the halyards against metal masts. Otherwise, yes, we are still sailing here. Sorry. :(

I check this site regularly

I like to check this site on a regular basis so I can look at all those pictures of you people sailing in water that does not require an ice breaker. This winter has been OK so far. We haven't had the temperature go above the freezing mark since mid November. Snow is good for skiing. We sent all the birds south where the bird baths don't freeze. Remember to post pics that show sun so I can feel warmer. Regards. Ken.
