It depends on what part of the world you are in. In the UK we only have skippers, normally Royal Yachting Association qualified. The title of Captain is generally applied to the person in charge of a ship, very large boat or maybe a commercial vessel.

Skipper is a synonym of captain.

As nouns the difference between skipper and captain
is that skipper is (nautical) the master of a ship (literally, 'shipper') or skipper can be one who skips while captain is a chief or leader.
As verbs the difference between skipper and captain
is that skipper is to be the skipper of a ship while captain is to act as captain.

SO, Skipper is in a direct charge of the ship, while Captain MAY be in charge of skipper. I think...

But then why limit such a contest to two at a time?

Yes Sir, I am a Captain. A lifetime at sea, bumped into chunks of ice off Svalbard...caught crabs in the Black sea..not the kind you eat..she was from Yalta (to be percise), , and when I'm racing on Wednesday night on my humble sailboat in Cape Cod or taking the Admiral for a sunset sail & hors d'oeuvre's....I wouldn't ask, however, it makes me feel good to hear..."Where to Captain?"
