Are you a Skipper or a Captain?

Well, I don't think you are going to get a lot of respect as 'the skipper' from the 20 plus hardened mariners aboard the freighter you are operating, so I would go with Captain, with a capital C there. On the cruise ship, it was more 'office manager' than either, and not a position I would ever hold again.
If there are paying passengers aboard a sailing vessel with paid crew it is good to be the captain, with a small C, sort of to say that if we all want to have a good time, listen to me.
If it's just a fun sail with friends, then skipper is really more than satisfactory, if everybody is so drunk they can't remember my name. With the wife it's SIR, if I want to sleep alone in the forepeak!

So as the 'Captain' of your vessel while at sail... does everyone 'listen' to your command? Do some object to your command when you ask them to perform an activity while pleasure cruising? Would that be considered mutiny? Ha ha... Would you reprimand them and put them below in the cabin for not obeying your order/command? Having served in the Navy not obeying a direct order from the Captain would land many in quite a bit of trouble... the chain of command cannot be broken except if the Captain poses a threat to the ship or crew and is therefore relieved of command. Can such a scenario occur in small vessels for pleasure and the crew relieves the Captain? What would be the dilemma of doing so? No more sail trips for the mutinous crew, including the Admiral? What do you think?

Or if you are Bismark Dinius the mere action of having your hand on the tiller is enough for being charged with a felony, while the boats owner/skipper/captain was charged with nothing.....

In the eyes of the law they decided Bismark was in charge not the actual owner/skipper/captain or what ever we want to call them...

Just for fun, here is my aversion to titles. With the Army's boats the senior individual aboard the LCM8s was the Coxswain. He or she was an E-5 or Specialist 5. The title was Specialist and often just the first name. Aboard the larger tugs or ships the senior individual was either a Chief Warrant 2 or 3. The title was Sir or Mr. Neither Captain or Skipper were ever used.

The Bismark Dinius case was a bizarre case. Right before trial he is charged with "felony boating under the influence causing great bodily injury". He was holding the tiller on the sailboat of his friend when a boat runs up on top of the stern of the sailboat injuring 4 and killing the sailboat owners girlfriend.
