Do you consider yourself a racer or a cruiser? Have you tossed out the oven to save a few pounds in your next club race, or do you scoff at racers as you motor past? Do you use your boat for both purposes, or are you still a racing virgin? Share your opinion, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

I'm a lover not a fighter

Or, more appropriately, I'm a cruiser not a racer! I know I'd learn a great deal about trim & all that but I'd rather just take it easy. Guess I'm just a lazy sailor! LaDonna

Will Race for Beer...

There is nothing better than getting to the club house FIRST for that Cold One. Although taking some good friends out on San Francisco Bay for a cruise is really great too. I guess, Since the Catalina 27 is so versatile, that racing or cruising are both great fun. Especially if you can cruise faster than the next guy. I am out every weekend doing all my club races and am planning a 5 day cruise at the end of the month. If you have not tried racing, Be careful, it is very addicting. Have fun, Hope to see you on the Line. Dave 'After Five'

Dedicated Cruiser..... but

I guess I'm of the old school that thinks Racing Sailboat is a contradiction! I've always been strictly a cruiser but I did join the racing club at our new marina. They had an "Open" to get new members and it was very interesting. The morning was a series of presentations on Racing: basic rules, strategies, safety, starting techniques all in about 2 hours! Then we broke in groups and experienced racers went with each new boat. I had my son-in-law, a young Hobie Cat racing couple and a J boat jockey on my Catalina 28 (which I had only sailed twice before myself) and we had a great afternoon. We did 2 windward/leeward mini races and we finished in the top half of the 18 boat fleet both times! It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be but it's definitely more work than just cruising along. I can see how racing might become addictive. Will I race again...probably. Maybe as crew for someone else next time. Will I become a real racer??? Not likely. I'm still adding more comforts to the boat, not go-fast stuff. But I'll certainly be there to cheer on anyone who does want to race.

racer/cruiser

I am a sailor/cruiser/racer. I sail and cruise on my 380. I race on a 36 Catalina (spinnaker class) and like both cockpit/grinding and deck work. Its all fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To cruise or not to cruise, that is the question!

My wife and I are cruisers, and we go on many 2,3 and 4 day cruises up and down the columbia river. But when we go out for a day sail, and there are 2 boats on the water, ther always seems to be a race. I crewed on many a race boat in my youth, but as age sets in, cruising for relaxation is more of what we are looking for.

Need for Speed

Most of the time we just cruiser on our C-36. Put when I feel the "Need for Speed" I race on a friend's J-Boat. That will get me over my problem:))

Cruise

I laugh at these folks who race boats that dont go faster than 10-15 mph. but more likely 7 to 10. To race at this crawl is absurd to me and a desperiate measure to fulfill some feeling of worth. Its like trying to speed up a snail WHY ...... I love the process of going somewhere at a low level of stress and to take in all the world and its happenings around me. To intoduce speed-and stress and testesorone into a pure enviroment is like putting a rock band in a church You can do it but both suffer from the experience. Life is too short as it is why race through and past things Older and Wiser Dan

Isn't sailing supposed to be relaxing

I have always felt that sailing is supposed to be a relaxing past time. And racing seems to add an element of stress to a supposed enjoyable pastime. I will race on other peoples boats (C-27's), but when I am out on my boat it is all about being relaxed. CD Toy Box Annapolis.
