There are two main things I need to do to my oday 25 before I put her in the water..I need to bottom paint and I need to rebed a through hull fitting and change the old gate valve to a ball valve..Not sure if I should do this myself or pay the yard to do it..bottom paint is $17/per ft..I have a 25ft boat..so that is $425..that includes a quick scrape and sand and one coat of ablative..my bottom is not the prettiest and it is multi layered with old coats of paint-what I really need to do is have it sodablasted and then epoxied and then bottom paint but I do not have the money to get into that project..does that sound like alot for bottom paint job?how much would just the paint cost me if I were to do it myself? On to my next issue-my one and only through hull fitting is loose-I noticed that the whole thing was turning when I tried to unscrew the gate valve which I was going to replace..so I called one of the guys at the yard to check it out and he said it needs to be rebedded and to replace gate with a ball valve for $200..I said if we are going to get into it shouldnt we just replace the whole through hull and he said it was not necessary and that it would cost double $400..I am not the handiest of sorts-which is not good for the hobby that I am in..and I really wouldnt want to mess up the through hull and sink my boat...So what do you all think I should do?Do these prices sound outrageous?

Yes a good bottom job would the best way to go. And your desire to soda blast is good. Sand blasting damages underlying laminates.
Is the boat out of water? Where is it stored. Too save money, you might want to sand it down and do it yourself. Is that an option?
And if you check archives, there are several sources listed for epoxies and hull primers. You can pay top dollar for the best or get seviceable product from some lesser known companies. Ask Joe about his bottom paint source.

The prices being quoted are not outrageous. They appear fair and typical. To replace a thru hull requires an appropriate amount of job knowledge and your yard has to keep at least one guy around at a fair salary to such repairs.

the boat is on the hard in stonypoint,ny on the hudson..I would like to get these things done in order to drop the boat in the water and then sail her down the hudson-around manhattan-up the east river to little neck bay-bayside marina where she will be residing for 6 months at a mooring..The only thing that concerns me is the quote that I got for the through hull was just for them to rebed the existing through hull and for a new ball valve..Should I trust there judgement or should I insist on a brand new through hull with proper backing plate and all the goodies -and obviously pay alot more for the job?Also I am about an hour away from the boat right now and I dont think I will have the time to do go back and forth to do all the bottom job work...
Before you shell out the $200.00 for rebeding of the thru-hull fitting, why don't you check with your local library for a book entitled "This Old Boat" by Don Casey? You must know someone at this marina that you can talk to about this. I installed a thru-hull fitting on my boat for a manual bilge pump and it was a snap. Of course, you're going to need help doing it, but it's not exactly rocket science. All that info is right in the book. You should be able to do the Ball valve too. As far as the bottom paint goes; If you can get someone to do it for you cheap, it's well worth it because I'm in the middle of prepping my boat for the bottom paint and I thank God that my boat is only 22'. It's a lot of work, it's a dirty job, and you need the equipment to do it. I just shored up my hull today so I could get at my centerboard and keel bottom. My centerboard pendant line and shackle are OK, but the cotter pin for the shackle was broke and I replaced it with a new cotter pin. I haven't received my bottom paint in the mail as of yet. This is neither an obvious or easy call. Yes a new thru hull with new ball valve and appropriate backing plate might be best.
But taking out any thru hull on an old boat is major surgery. You might damage adjacent laminates more that it is worth. Yes all can be be fixed but is it worth it in old production boat?
My opinion, since cost are a factor and you do not have experience is to let them do their fix and be done with it. It the actual thru hull is not leaking then I would not replace it on an old O'Day 25. I have understanding and experience fixing and can say it is not a simple fix to be done in one hour.
I would keep a tube of the underwater epoxy paste in my tool box in case of a problem while sailing.
You will need to watch out for that reported Lock Ness creature reported to have moved to Long Island Sound.
