Stupid question but I was suprised to find how many quality boats are. I'm no racer, more of a bouncer abuser and want solid fiberglass. Thanks

Catalina hulls are solid FRP

There may be one or more of the bigger boats that are cored above the waterline, but below the waterline, all of the Catalina hulls are solid FRP. Depending on the model and the year, the deck may be cored with plywood or balsa, or it may be entirely solid, but for the most part, where there is a deck penetration, the deck is also solid FRP. Alchemist is right!

When my dealer was fitting out the C-310 with transducers, they gave me the jigs that were cut out of the hull...impressive...1 inch of solid FRP.

This is good!

I've been searching awhile for a bigger boat and was suprised to find some of the "better names" have bulsa above the waterline. Even the totally seaworthy Bayfield 40. Personally, I think it's a trashy idea that scares the bejesus out of me, and has no place on a cruiser. Raceing where weight is vastly important, maybe it's OK. I have an old Ericson 30+ now and it's proven itself to be truly a tough little boat that will last forever and I'll always love it. But alas, I'm in heat over the 380 and have been thinking now where is the dark side of this boat? I can't seem to find it. I just can't find the value in the priceier boats since the layout seems perfect, reasonably shallow draft, seemingly well built, tons of storage, all the modern stuff. Plastic window frames are not a $50,000 problem. Anybody know ANY drawbacks to this boat? I chartered a 34 in March to take a longer close look at Catalina in general, yet have a feeling I'm going to be a broke happy proud sailor again in April. At this point this Chevy driver is looking at a Camery and wondering why a Lexus is so much money.

Doug, all I can say is...

the 380 is an excellent choice...I actually like the layout better than the 40 footer. I've been on the boat and it IS solid. The cabin layout is great, and, if I ever move up...that will be my boat (of course, I am very happy with our C-310, but you never know).
