I read an article in Sailing about retrofitting a Rhodes 19. It was stated that the mast is strong enough on a Rhodes 19, (and I hope a Mariner) to make mast spreaders unnecessary. What do you think?
I owned an O'Day Mariner 2+2 and it was my first real sail boat. I can't imagine how I would have rigged it without the spreaders on the mast. It seems the mast would never be allowed to flex or bent if you just had wires going straight from the mast to the deck, the spreaders are a very important design on every sail boat. that's my $0.02 worth
