Are spreaders necessary on a mariner?

I recently purchased a Mariner 19. I would like to simplify the rigging by eliminating the spreaders, and run the upper shrouds directly to the chain plate.Recently Sailing Magazine contained an article about refurbishing a Rhodes 19. In the article it was mentioned that the spreaders for the upper shrouds were eliminated because they were "unnecessary".What do you think? I would appreciate your advice! Thanks, MMurray

I don't know myself. I'd be very hesitant though about redesigning the geometry of the rigging. Spreaders play a very important role on most rigs. In light airs it may be fine but what happens to the loads on the rig in a good blow? They are necessary ... don't waste any more time

thinking about it ... unless of course you never go out in winds over 10 kts.The spreaders allow the use of a lighter weight mast ... which is one of the design things the designers like to do to enhance the performance.vic

Spreaders are necessary

Keep the spreaders. In heavy wind under full sail the spreaders help to spread the load on the mast. Without them you could over load the mast to a point of collapse.
