What gauges or guidelines are useful when adjusting the standing rigging on a 22 ft sailboat? I need some basic information.

Loos Model 91

Look around for a Loos gauge. Model 91 should be right for the H22. Easy to use, very easy. Well worth the $40 or so you will have to pay to get a new one.

Gaugeless gauging

Hello, As noted in the adjoining post, a small Loos gauge might work for the wire on your boat. But my experience is that gauges are good for two reasons: to speed up the tuning process; and to impress the client with official-looking tools. You can get just as good a dockside tune, albeit more slowly, by measuring how much the wire stretches as you tune (see Selden's free tuning guide). And of course there's no substitute for a follow-up dynamic tune, where you assess things under way. Be in touch if you'd like any follow-up details on this. Fair leads, Brion Toss

In addition to Brians reply ......

With a gauge, you can readily 'return' to the same numbers after slacking, repair work, etc. The best is to dynamically tune, then take the numbers and use these numbers for future reference to monitor the system. Any 'ductile' changes that occurs in the system later on will show on the numbers. I find a gauge will get me to a good static tune faster than by 'eyeball', but such adjustments are only 'initial' that need to be 'tweaked' by actually sailing ans watching the mast, etc., Then I record such numbers when Im satisfied and use them as a reference for future work/tuning.
