Are fixed VHF radios "old school"?

We have fixed 25W unit at nav station with RAM mike at helm. Also have 2x handhelds, for when we are ashore in different places. Underway on ICW handheld at helm great for bridges, allows main set to stay on 16.
Hand held also great when on dingy away from mother ship.

As repeatedly said, it all depends on where you're sailing. For Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas, a handheld VHF supplemented by cell phone is fine, provided you have loaded the numbers of the CG, and state/local emergency services in your cell phone before you need them.
