Are all alternators created equal?

Well, that's not exactly my question, but it sounded good. My question is this:

I saw the following ad:
Mercury Marine "Quicksilver" alternator. Professionally rebuilt, never used. Came off 27Ft Searay with 300HP - 454engine. Was a spare, but I sold the boat. Hate to just throw it away. A new one would cost over $300. $30 OBO.

While my first step in upgrading my electric system is to get an additional battery, I'm thinking I may eventually upgrade the alternator also, especially if this alternator would work for me. If so, then it's nearly free. (I have a Universal M35B engine, if that makes a difference.)

Thanks.

If you upsize the alternator output

you may have to upsize some wiring, and/or other components. Putting a 100A alternator on wiring and regulator originally sized for a 30A alternator is usually not a good idea. Just a heads-up.

Choosing The Right Alternator

Check this out to find the correct alternator. If this $30 alt will fit then it would be a good deal.
ED has covered the differences quite well.

An alternator

designed for use on a power boat is not the same critter as an alternator designed for use on a sailboat.
