Arch on a 23?

I may be crazy, but while Mr. Jim Beam and I were reading the thread about relocating the traveller on a 23, the idea hit me. If said arch were designed properly, it could stand slightly aft of the backstay (thus not a problem to the rigging), sport a short track for the traveller, be out of the way (as far as headroom is concerned), and even provide a convenient handhold for people coming up the transom swim ladder (as long as they remember to duck!). As an added bonus, it could support the mast when trailering (similar to the U-bend in the bow pulpit)... It may even be a good place to snap a makeshift Bimini cover. Am I crazy, or could this actually work? --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind'

Ooops - big snag #1...

Seems the mainsheet would get caught up in the backstay, the way I've originally described the rig. Ah, well, back to the drawing board... --J

Main Sheet Traveler?

Hi Jon & Mr. Jim Anything is possible, but I don't see how the Main Sheet can be clear of the back stay when the boom is (as it always is) forward of the backstay and you tack back and forth. Good cradle for the stepped mast though. Don't know about the handhold for the swimmer. Your thoughts on this please.. Larry Barnes "CNTRL SEA"

Through the Arch

Why not design the arch so that the back stay would go through the arch? We are all thinking of how to put one on our 23.5, 26, 240, and 260s if the stern rail seats can be added why not an arch as described. If one were to come up with a good design there would be alot of takers out there I am sure.

23 arch?

I am constantly asked about arches on the Hunters (trailerables) and other manufacturers. Again, simplicity and cost are two factors to be considered. Investigate the cost of a stainless steel arch to include any installation charges as well. The cons outway the pros for arches on small boats in my book. I have looked into this before this came onto the forum several years ago when the Hunter 340 & 310 with arches was intorduced at the Atlantic City Show. This is only an opinion. Crazy Dave Condon

GACK!!!

Let the Arched Hunters be what they are and let the great Hunters remain blessedly archless.

Arch? really?

I think what "Crazy Dave" is trying to say is, is it REALLY worth it to put an arch on this boat? I think the cost would just about justify a boat with an arch that was designed to be on the boat in the first place. BTW DAVE> NICE TO MEET YOU!
