Hunter 23.5 Canyon Lake
Planning a trip to Aransas Bay, TX for Thanksgiving. May also do some quick short trips in the area before. Looking for some tips from anyone who has sailed in the area.

Been pouring over NOAA Charts and looks like if I go east or south from Fulton I should have plenty of water for my Hunter 23.5 which drafts at 5'6" with the board down. At 3 - 5 kn/hr should have lots of room to poke around for the a day at a time. One channel to cross.

I was there Monday and the wind looked a little too exciting for me (24 kn) right now but I lived in Corpus Christi for a while and wind should calm down in November (but there is always wind).

I've only been sailing for a year and on a lake in a canyon. Has been some interesting wind. I am expecting the bay to be manageable with proper planning.

Anyway, found a slip in Fulton and want to explore the area. Tips, thoughts?

Aransas Bay is a great place to sail. I used to sail that bay on my Cal 25 with nothing but a compass. I currently sail a Hunter 356 out of Corpus but make the trip to Rockport/Fulton about 3 to 4 times a year. November should be a great time to sail. Although there are some places where depth could be a problem, in general you should be fine. I draft 4'11.

If you want to anchor out for the night I would recommend Mud Island. Very sheltered from the usual SE wind. However in November you could pick up a Norther but they are always forecasted,

Would also recommend going up Lydia Ann channel to Port Aransas. that's about a 2.5 hour sail.

Dano: Did you ever take your CAT 25 out on the Gulf? Some days it looks so calm I'm tempted.

Amry,

I did not...but it's certainly doable. In the summer months the wind is "typically" light in the morning and then builds during the day to 18-20. There are many mornings where the Gulf would be great sailing. Being in Corpus it takes me over two hours to get to the Gulf.

Of course your plan is to sail in November which changes things somewhat but not necessarily for the worst. Just check the weather report and go for it. Go out and if it's not enjoyable just come back in. It's not like you're sailing to Florida!
