I have a 1979 30' SR with the 5411 11 hp universal motor and the aqua muffler is leaking where the pipes go into and out of the box. It doesn't leak very much but when there is water in the bilge the shaft dampener throws the bilge water all over. Has any one hade any luck reparing the fittings where the pipes go in or should it be repaced completly?. The box appears to be glassed to the bottom of the boat (how do I remove this?). Many thanks for all of you who respond to the questions here in the forums, it is a wealth of information. Fair Winds Jim Nixon Live Now

Leaking muffler

Jim; I had an '82 C-30 with the 5411 that I had to replace the exhaust pipe and the muffler tube. The straight tube that comes from the box doesn't allow a good fit for the bit of hose that connects the exhaust pipe to the muffler box, so I cut it off and ground the stub off/out with a rotary rasp in a drill motor. Some older marine engine shops have fiberglass tube in various sizes you can buy by the foot. I bought six inches, used about four, and put it back into the box at a better angle to mesh with the hose, securing it with Marine-Tex. Worked well for me, although you could use fiberglass cloth and resin, I guess. Larry W.

Aqua Muffler?

If you are talking about a Vetus Muffler, I had the same problem on my 85'27 Cat. I cut about 2 inches of the end of the hose, (there was ample length)for a fresh connection and then wrapped teflon tape for plumbing applications several times around the end of the muffler end and re-attached the hose. That stopped the leak.

just replace it

I had the same problem. I replaced the riser and the muffler at the same time. The muffler is screwed onto some wood that is glassed to the hull. Just unscrew. A new muffler cost me 175.00 and the riser 145.00. You must have one heck of leak to make the mess you are talking about.
