Has anyone with C310 had occasion to drain their water lift muffler? Like many I use aft
under cockpit berth for a garage. Will have to move sail bags, 75 lb inflatable
dingy and much other marine gear to get access to muffler. Would appreciate
any info with regard to draining before moving stuff.

Thank you.

Clyde, what makes you think you need to do this? Have you been trying to start your engine and it didn't? This is usually the scenario when the muffler gets full. But once the engine starts whatever water is in there will get blown out.

Very true. Have changed fuel filters every year for nine years and mostly start without bleeding. cranked but didn't start. Opened
bleed bolt and saw few bubbles come out looked clear and cranked. No start. Opened bleed bolt thought
saw few bubbled then clear. Cranked didn't start. Tried again no start. Opened bleed bolt no fuel coming out. Checked
fuel pump and found loose wire. Am now concerned with all the cranking shuddea counted seconds
but didn't might have filled muffler so wanted to check.

Doesn't sound like enough to need to even thinking about draining.

What engine?

One idea is to close the raw water through hull while trying to start a stubborn engine.
This stops water from being pumped into the exhaust.
Once the engine starts, open the water valve.

Stu - M25 XPB - jssailem has good answer. Just shut raw water intake until
engine starts then open valve. Great idea.

There won't be that much water to worry about. Just climb down and drain it, It can't hold more than a couple of gallons. Open the drain plug, let drain into the bilge and put the plug back in. Take an old towel dry things up before you climb out.

You are so right Dave. I am 96 years old and wanted to avoid climbing around on hands and
knees in tight spot moving couple hundred lbs sail bags and lot of other stuff including
large panels in this aft berth - my "garage." But would if had to.

At 96 just to be moving is a good sign! Or is that a typo and you are 69? At any rate, I hear you. At 73 I try to spend as little time as possible in awkward positions in the boat, however, the boat seems to take great pleasure in causing me to dive into its bowels for whatever reason it can find.

Clyde, this is a BAD idea. Why? Because your raw water pump is not made to run DRY.
Stu you are right as usual. Seals and impellor wouldn't like it much. Keep ignition
key around handle of engine raw water intake seacock to prevent this however think the
30 seconds or less to get from cockpit to valve wouldn't hurt it based on experience
which resulted in keeping key on handle.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Regret to say no typo. Full disclosure No San Francisco Bay or ocean sailing now jjust up and
down river in the Delta although do get winds 25 -30 plus now and then. Have to look out for
ocean going ships using the river.

Absolutely no need to apologize. More power to you! If I live another 23 years I hope to be agile and cognizant enough to walk much less sail.

Stu - another thought. Seals not involved but if impellor ends broke off and got into
heat exchanger would have to clean it out. I change impellors every year with low
hours may not be problem.

Yes, yet another good reason to NOT run the pump dry. From what you've told us, it sure doesn't seem to need to even think about the muffler. IIRC you HAVE started the engine, so if that's true, discussion over, right? Also, I was always under the impression that an XPB was self bleeding, but using the knurled knob works, too. But in all my 25 years with my knurled knob on my M25, I've never seen fuel there; I just run the pump until the pump clicking sounds slow down with the knob open, then I close it; assuming you ran your glow plugs long enough, then your failed pump wire issue was the culprit. I'm a mere 79, thx for the positive outlook, keep up your good work! :) I often sailed The Delta, both in our previous Catalina 25, and on Aquavite; loved those days; Lost Slough is where my avatar photo was shot at dawn.

Yup Stu got it running. Had loose wire in male electric connector between fuel pump and wiring harness.
Lot of vibration in that wire will have to figure how to stiffen up. My bleed bolt lets out little bubbles
and very very small drip of fuel. When no more bubbles good to go. My electric fuel pump in M25 XPB does not click
for some reason. Very rarely have to bleed think suppose to be self bleeding. I did shut off raw water seacock
cranked eng couple seconds didn't start. Cranked couple seconds and it took off like brand new. Took about
nine seconds to get down in cabin and open seacock. Made annual impellor change. Looked really
good nothing came loose. Life is good.
