A friend is beginning the 1000-mile trek from Chicago via river system (Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Tenn-Tom) to Mobile, ultimately headed to Caribbean. Can't go but contributed to the send off by fabricating the mast cradle and port-starboard shelves for the library (port side attached).

Certainly pushing the season, 'cuz the yacht yard has the mast step scheduled for Monday and is pulling the docks for winter storage as soon as he's pushed off, mid-week at the latest, if not before; they're hoping the 'before' is in order.

32° this AM, going to hover in the 30's-40's all week. Hope the heater works and the winter foul weather gear is in good shape!

Then wine Steve, not beer. And if you give a nice red then you won't tax the refrigeration.

Is there a piece of the mast supports not shown? I am sure you have something for the mid-point that mounts right over the mast step.

Ed, the mid-span support...

is pending, as it will index into the deck-step fitting. It was built w/ a bit of forgiveness, allowing for a mix of shim thicknesses to 'bring it snug'. This final component won't be known until the mast is horizontal and laying across the for/aft supports, then it'll all become much clearer :doh:.

I agree w/ the red wine solution to avoid taxing/packing the fridge, but this trip could force even the most resolute sailor into tapping the rum! We'll see what happens, from afar. Wonder what Christmas in Mobile is like?

I asked...

...the same question and the response was "there's a few fixed bridges that'd keep me bottled up". I trust the research was sufficient, 'cuz it's not cheap & w/o effort to get it down and secure. The mast step in Mobile will cost @ the same and be fraught with the same amount of hassles.

One benefit (that I can think of) is you can fire up the engine in the AM, get underway, settle in on an RPM and not worry about clearance. Worth it? Don't know but we'll find out, from afar.

High-20's° this AM with the threat of snow. Wonderful timing to begin a river-trip adventure, eh?

I would recommend several bottles of a reasonably good port wine. It is traditional to choose any port in a storm.

Grizz, this is your pointy end racing pal. Are you on board right now? One thing you can do is to keep the proper ratio in the cooler

...you've got to change your sign-in to North Point! As to 'proper ratio', it's important to afix a reminder in a visible location, like the cooler or the refrigerator. The components of the 'ratio' are usually mandated by the skipper. Photo attached of one version (pay no heed to the Humpty Dumpty/Hemlock Egg)...

Today in Chicago is certainly an incentive

To head South! Saw the boat at Crowley's dock this weekend when I stopped by to put the finishing touches on winterizing my boat. Figured he was probably a REAL late leaver from one of the marinas. Hope to hear how the trip goes.

Get the a Kindle reader from Amazon so they can store more food and drink on the library shelves they just bought. Be sure they have a fully loaded medical kit with the necessaries to suture deep cuts, antibiotics, etc.

Grizz, your friend is doing the great loop. I heard someone mention that they wanted a trawler this weekend. I was looking up trawlers to see what they were and came across this great loop. I know everyone here but me has heard of this but I didn't know it was possible.
Have any of you guys done the great loop in a sailboat? I read that the water gets as low as 5', that would make it tough for most sailboats.

A day by day account with lots of information and its well written.

'Proper Ratio'...

...is somewhat of an inside joke, serving as a reminder for stocking purposes for maintaining the ratio of cold beer to pop/water. I believe the ratio is 'out of tolerance' when it falls below 3-1 and works for both ice-box and refrigerated units. It's a carry-over from when we were much younger and a lot crazier but still applies during select activities.

Be these complaints from yar modern day sailors re proper ratio? Argh laddies! What would Nelson's boys had done? The only time they complained about yer improper ratio was when the grog was watered down to much. Larn to drink yer likker strait thar bys, and yull ner 'ave a complaint bout proper ratio... argh... where me screech?

With ambient temperatures in the 30's a few cases of beer will not tax the refrigeration system one bit. Have you thought of a leather bound log book which they can use every day of their trip and relive their adventure for the years to come. They can also keep it in the bookshelf you built. If it were me I would take the bottle of rum! They are a little late leaving, Tennesee was in the 20's this morning so I hope they are not rellying solely on the boat's heat pump.

When my friends went cruising, I gave them cash. I didn't want to take up any room on their boat and this way they could take care of their needs for cruising, It costs a fortune before you leave and sometimes all along the way..Smitroe
