Last weekend I removed my old striping and I just order a couple of 1" stripes to put on my boat. I couldn't get the color and size I wanted as a single roll, so now I may be challenged to put them on straight. I plan to put them on my boat with about a 1.25" gap between them. Anyone got a tip on how to put them on straight? I plan to put them on the boat about 10" below the hull/deck seam. Many thanks in advance.

You pull the tape straight....

Tack one end of the tape then pull the tape straight and sight down it and remove any irregularities and re-attach, it akes a bit of time and practice but you'll get the hang of it. You can also use a laser level. Good luck.

Make a guide

Apply masking tape just above (or just below) where you want the trim stripe. You can easily adjust the maksing tape until you have a perfectly aligned guide. Then it should be easy to position the real stripe in exactly the right place. Pin stripers sometimes use a magnetic tape guide in a similar manner when they stripe cars.

removal of strips

Rich I am about to do the same thing... remove the old stripes on a 28.5 Hunter. What do you use to make a copy of where the new stripes will go? Also what did you use to remove (20 year old stripes). I also have a 27 Catalina that I thought were stripes but it was painted on. One more thing? Where did you order the stripes from factory or WM? Thanks for anything... Katie

discoloration aided me

The striping had been on my '79 Hunter 27 so long that the gel coat was a whiter white beneath it. Plan B for me was to jerry rig a t-square-with-marker-affixed that would run along the top of the rub rail and leave a line a uniform distance below on the hull. Even with a line to follow, you're working here with curves in two dimensions.

Just did it!

Used 2" blue painters tape as guide. Found the wider tape was easier to get a "straighter" line. Measured off rubrail, marked with grease pencil, cleaned with acetone, layed up the painters tape, then ran stripe below tape. Almost perfect. Took about 2.5 hours to do two sides of 41' boat. Next time would consider using one of those laser levels.

LaRue: On this site I learned abou the "eraser". It's a rubber wheel you chock in a drill and it rubs off the stripe in itty-bitty pieces. 3M makes "The Eraser", but I got mine made by Sherwin-Williams. Got at auto parts store for $5. Took 5 hours to do two stripes on a 26' boat. I've heard that others used a heat gun and plastic scraper with some luck. I got the new stripes on the internet. Searched about 15 sites before I found what I wanted. I got two 1" stripes, one black and one red, both reflective! BRYCE - you win the prize. I'll give your method a try. Many thanks to all...
