Okay, the old name graphics have been carefully removed, the glue residue dissolved with acetone, the area has had a coat of Meguiar's #49 Heavy-Duty Oxidation Remover, and the de-naming ceremony is about to be performed. It's now time to order new graphics. Who do you like and what experiences have you had? Thanks in advance. Ned Strain s/v Family Therapy ('95 Hunter 336)

Go to the local sign shop

We got out new vinyl letters at the local shop that does everything from banners to coffee mugs, seven six-inch letters-10 bucks. Ours came sandwiched between two paper sheets with proper spaces between the letters. After locating the name on the transom and taping it across the top, we cut vertically between the letters and, one by one, removed the backing, laid the letter down, and rubbed it onto the boat. It worked. Andy s/v Baroque

Use soapy water first

I did almost the same thing when I applied the name to Kittiwake. I purchased the name in the color, size, and font desired from a local sign shop and spacing was already configured. Get a spray bottle with a little liquid dishwashing soap and fill bottle. Spray the hull with the soapy mixture and apply the name right off the sheet and carefully remove the cover paper. The soapy hull will give you a couple of minutes to make adjustments and easily push all the bubbles out the edge. It took me about 15 minutes to complete the process and just spray the hull down to rinse off the excess dried soap when everything dries. I did in June and it only took another 10-15 minutes and looked great.

Our experience.

Ned: We had a shadow script put on the stern of our boat. The boat is "Heather Marie" we did it in two colors of blue. The cost was $52. Some friends had their name put on both sides of their boat (9 letters, one color, no shadow) and it cost them about $250. So the price is all over the place. Make sure you get good quality and maybe check with some others in your harbor.

Boat US works great!

I used Boat US' graphics department for my boat name 'Passionata'. They put a layout together and I applied it four years ago...it still looks great! Price is right, easy directions...I think it took me all of about 1 hour to complete the project. Good Luck!

Here's How

After you have removed the Hunter name from your vessel place the name CATALINA on your transom and increase the value of your boat

Compare different vendor at a boat show

I checked several vendors at a show for price and graphic skills. We looked at many different fonts, styles and effects. The instructions that were included with shipment were complete. I put the name on both sides. I spent an hour or more measuring then applied in 20 min. Good Luck

PROPER VINYL

DEAR SIR, I'VE R/R QUITE A FEW VINYL LETTERING FOR BOTH MY BUSINESS AND HOBBY'S. I HAVE ALWAYS USED AN OLD CLASSMATE THAT OWNES A SIGN SHOP BACK IN OKLAHOMA. OF COURSE THATS NOT GOING TO HELP YOU BUT I DO KNOW THAT IT'S VERY EASY TO MAKE AND CHOOSE YOUR FONT IN MICROSOFT WORD AND THEN TAKE IT ON DISK TO A LOCAL SIGN SHOP. ONE WORD OF ADVICE! BECAUSE VINYL SIGNS IN MARINE CONDITIONS ARE SUBJECT TO DOUBLE REFLECTIVE SUN LIGHT, HEAT, SCRUBBING ETC THE PROS DO NOT USE THE SAME STANDARD THICK VINYL USED ON SERVICE TRUCKS OR STORE WINDOWS. THEY USE A HIGHER GRADE THAT IS THINNER (WILL RESIST MAZING). THE COST OF THE HIGHER GRADE VINYL IS APX 30% BUT IS SUPPOSE TO LAST 10 YEARS WITHOUT FADE OR MAZING. YOU MIGHT GET 3-4 YEARS OUT OF STANDARD VINYL. SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE THE HARD WORK DONE, NEXT TIME USE A BIODEGRADABLE CITRUS BASED VARNISH REMOVER APPLIED TO THE TOP OF EACH VINYL LETTER AND REMOVE LARGE BAKED ON GRAPHICS IN JUST A FEW MIN'S! HOPE THIS HELPS, OCEANOKIE
