Apostle Islands

I’d like to consider a road trip to Lake Superior and sail the Wisconsin side of the Apostle Islands this summer. Have any Hunter 26/ 260 owners sailed the Apostle Islands? Do you have any suggestions, warnings, must see, hot spots, anchorage or marina stories to share? We are casual day sailors – not racing or big water – would we enjoy a trip to the Apostles?

Al Santini sails the Apostle islands every year on his P-21, you may want to post your question over there.

Go For It!

I trailered my H26 to the Apostles a few times over the last couple of years. It is a fantastic place to explore. Your 260 is plenty big enough, just use common sense and heed the weather. With all the islands you can usually get to the calm side to ride out any weather. I would recommend Rocky Island, Devil's Island and the Sea Caves, of course Madeline and the Burnt Down Bar. We launched in town at the public ramp and parked a few blocks away up the hill near the library. Have fun and get good map because the Islands don't have signs on them for identification. I currently have an H28 in Duluth but a favorite trip is still sailing to the Apostles for a long weekend. Have fun.

Great Cruising Area

Have sailed the Apostles many times over the years in both a 22 footer and then in my 1994 H26. It is a great place to explore and stay out for a few nights. Put boat in at public ramp or any of several private marinas in or near the town of Bayfield. Weather can turn nasty on Lake Superior, but if you are sailing around the islands, you can find a place to hide and ride out any blow. Would suggest you find a copy of a crusing guide called " Superior Way" by Bonnie Dahl. It has great detail about all the places to sail on Lake Superior and I pretty sure it includes info on all the Apostle Islands. It's available online or at some marine stores. Lots of places to explore and easy to find anchoring spots and even dock space at some of the islands. You can spend several summers working your way around all the islands. It's a popular spot for sailors in the summer. Have fun and watch the weather.
