have any opinions about a 1977 30 ft Capital Newport sailboat? The seller is asking 5000.00 and wondered if that is a good price? Ive seen some on the net for higher than that. I looked at the exterior of the boat and it needs some TLC. The sails look good. The seller said the Atomic 30 hp runs good and has 250 hrs on it. How is is for cruising? Living on it for a week at a time? coastal sailer? Thanks

250 hours in 35 years is a bit low I think.
Without knowing the actual condition it is hard to say if 5k if a good deal or not. But I wouldn't count on the engine to be very good.
Newport 30 is a good coastal cruiser as far as I know. I looked at one before I bought my boat.

After a motor is rebuilt the clock starts over so it may be 250 since the rebuild. Ask to see the receipts. Also, people generally clean and even paint a motor
after rebuilding so if it rusty and caked with oil and dirt I'd suspect smoke is being blown somewhere by the owner. Also, see if it looks like someone just spray painted over the rust and oil like a used car lot "detail" job. If either of the later 2 I'd walk away.

Newport 30's are pretty popular in our area. Most of the cruising done is short range, to Catalina, Ensenada, Channel Islands...... even though it's only 5k I think you'd be well advised to pay for an in the water survey, and hire a diver to give you a report on the bottom.(That's what I did) A full survey would include lifting the boat out of the water for inspection and a mechanic evaluating the motor. You could get estimates for both before making your decision.

Do a full survey. Have them do a short haul to make sure the boat is in good shape and all things are right on the underside.
