Hey Guys and Gals~

I found this website that offers free virtual sailing races on line. I have been playing for about 6 months and have found them to be quite entertaining. It is all based on real time and real races throughout the world. I have played various types of sailing games, but this is one that I found to be the most true to real life sailing. There is about 500 dedicated racers, mostly from Northern Europe and New Zealand. There are very few US sailors and it would be neat to get a good patriotic presence on board.

I know it's summer and this is the time for us to be out on our real boats, but you can still play and not have to be sitting in front of your computers all day.

Starting on 7-19 there is a race that coincides in real time with the Chicago to Mackinac Race. It would be great to see an American win this. Past races in our area has been The Transpac, TransAT, Newport to Panama, and Panama to San Francisco. This is really a fun thing to do and you will meet some great folks from all over the world on the chat.

I am just letting you guys know about this. I have no relationship with this site, only trying to show you some fun.

I also surfed on to this site about six momths ago. I forwarn you, it is very addictive. I've been known to set the alarm clock to make a gybe at 3:00 am. The current race is using 70 foot sloops. My boat hit 20 knots yesterday. Like Rob says, very few US sailors have joined the fun. Register now, and you can practice your skills on this race to prepare you for the Chicago race. You'll be one day behind, but you can see how the race operates.

I downloaded the software

It seems like a real time commitment. A couple years ago some friends talked me into a middle ages village building and war game. I had to stop playing when I was getting up at 4AM to try and get in some raids while people were sleeping.

Is there a way to practice with the software before commiting to a race?

There is no financial or any other commitment involved other than your own dedication to win. You can practice anytime, even in a real race. Someone has to finish last and quite a few boats DNF each race. You set your commands whether on a compass course or you can request a specific true wind angle and the boats will do as you wish. You can set future course changes at future time intrevals. It is addictive and you will lose sleep in the middle of the night as you are sailing through the Fiords of Norway, but it's a blast. It also uses NOAA weather Gribs in real time! Have you ever wondered what it is like to sail through a Hurricane. Try it and if you dont like playing or feel it eats up to much sleep, don't log on and forget it. But try it on your summer break, I think you will enjoy it.

I will give it a shot

I guess I better download the software on my laptop as well. That way I only have to roll over in the middle of the night to check the progress.

Rob, I'll race you!

Less than 48 hours from the start. I assume that the software does corrected time based on the boat that you're sailing? I'll see how I can do against you, your virtual boat against my real one. Alan is flying in to race with me and hopefully show me how to tweak a little more speed out of the boat.

If you're interested in following, all of the boats this year with have trackers on board. Just go to the website and follow the pack. We're racing Section 9, Silent Voice.

Wish us well -

Game on!!! The actual boat polar that is used in the game is a North American 40. I have a couple of buddies that are sailing on a NA40 called Drumbeat. I think it is in section 8. I see your in a Hunter 355, nice ride. I will track you too. After the race we will compare numbers and see who wins. Best of luck to you and your crew in the Mac race and to all of yours safety.

100th running...

...of the longest freshwater sailboat race in the world.

Nearly 500 boats and 4000 rowdy sailors will descend on Mackinac Island for a shot at the trophy and a bloody good time afterward.

.....gonna have a ball!! ;D
