I need to replace one of my cabin fans. It is a one-speed Guest oscillating fan --- at the one speed it can be annoying. Tends to be too fast and loud. Boater's World has a comparable fan for $20. However, I see that Sailnet has a Hella two-speed, non-oscillating fan for $56. (Link below) Seems a bit much to pay for a small 12V fan. I've replaced two Guest fans in three years. I installed one
I bit the bullet and dumped the oscillating fan because of the noise and installed the Hella fan. It is expensive for a plastic unit. You can connect to the same wiring. The fan is quite, but does not oscillate (point and shoot). The wiring can be visible since the wiring is external and come up the side of the mounting bracket. Check it out first at the marine stores.

Go For the Hella
I've had two Hella fans, one for several years. They are MUCH quieter than other fans. But best of all, they are very energy efficient. You can run it for hours and not worry about your battery. Good luck.

Hella Turbo
Wynn: Get a Hella Turbo. I have had one that has run for sooo many years I cannot tell you. Even left it running during the winter for a couple of seasons. It if finally getting noisey but still works. The new Hellas are rated at 50,000 hrs or something like that. I have the older ones that were only rated for about 5000 hrs (2 years+)

Hella Good
I got a Turbo about a year ago, when they could still be had for $50. Very quiet, 2 speeds, moves plenty of air, and if current draw is an issue it's the only way to go. Check the West Marine catalog for the amperages of the other fans offered--not even close.

Thanks for the advice on the Hella fans. I just returned from the boat and the offending fan died of terminal causes yesteday. I am please to announced that it will be replaced by a new Hella fan soon. Regards, Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

Wynn: I just installed 5 Hella fans on our new Catalina 400. One suggestion for instillation: You CAN hide the wires by drilling small holes in the mounting bracket (total of 2 holes) and run the wiring through it. You just need to leave enough wire "outside" to allow proper movement of the fan. I'm also going to experiment with routing the wiring along the side of the fan and mount and then through the base to make it all but invisible. Hella Fans
I have two Hella Fans on Tashtego. I removed the mounting boss on the base and bought a pair of large spring clamps so that I can move them around to wherever I can clamp them. I also spliced a coiled 12 Volt cord with cigarette lighter plug onto them so that I can plug them in to either of the 12 Volt outlets. My only complaint is that there is no guard on the back. I have stung my fingers several times when trying to adjust them. A serious problem if you have small children aboard.
