Upgrade to the westerbeke

Sorry I took so long to reply. The alternator was a Lesterer 100 amp. (I think that is how it is spelled?) I bought the batteres from a local Trojan battery distributor. There should be one in your area. They cost about $100 per battery. I am not sure of the cost of the alternator. I think it was around $200. I used a Xantreex high output alternator (3 Stage) and also a Link 1000 which is all you need for a house bank. You only need to know voltage on the starting bank.

Alternator Upgrade

By the way I used the mount that previously existed on the Westerbeke. The Lesterer alternator fit the old bracket. The wiring was a bit problematic at first as the old Prestolite had more wires but using logic it was not hard to figure out.

Bought Lester Alternator

I bought it at a local battery supplier! After I wrote the last post I checked my spelling. It is 'Lester' Alternator. I would go to an alternator shop to buy. I am sure they will know the brand. It comes in many different outputs and types.(automotive and marine) I thought it might be a German co. but not sure.

Gary, do you recall whether you needed...

anything other than the saddle mount and to reset the Tach? Also, what was involved in resetting the tach? Was teh saddlemount expensive? Thx so much

Chuck, I didn't do it myself

but I think all that's involved is ordering the alternator with the saddle mount; it has to have some sort of mount. As to the tach, again I didn't do it, but I don't think its a big deal. You might want to go the balmar website or to jack rabbbit energy systems website. You will also need an external regulator, becasue the OEM unit has a built-in automotive style regulator, which you don't want anyway because its not optimal for marine usage. Again--check out those websites.
