Hi everyone!
My partner and I are in Fort Lauderdale desperately looking to buy a boat and get sailing. We’ve fallen in love with the Hunter 38 and are looking for one that’s ready to go!

Does anyone have one for sale or know someone who does? We’re happy to drive a few hours for the right boat. Max budget is $75,000 but we’re looking to close within a fortnight and we’re cash buyers so hoping that’s a bit more attractive?!

Ideally would be setup for off grid living with solar setup and a good fridge. Dodger is a must, would like a Bimini. Hoping for dinghy davits but can be flexible!

A bit of background on us:
We both grew up racing Dinghys and competed for team GB at multiple world and European championships. Having worked as doctors through the pandemic we’re looking forward to a much needed sabbatical!

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Callum and Ruth

Nice ask, but your budget can’t afford the current market.

First built in 2004, even the 2005’s are priced 20K over your budget. One of the cheapest was an 2005 in Spain.

Best of luck with your search. Perhaps compromise on a boat will be needed if you want to get on the sabbatical this year.

Thanks for your reply. I’m not sure about the build year - We just missed out on a 2000 hunter 38 for 65K…there are some out there!

As @jssailem mentioned, the Hunter 38 is the newest in the ~38ft range, introduced in 2004.

The previous model in that size is the Hunter 380 (yes, the zero matters) was from 1999 (I think) and similar layout inside, and a little cheaper.

Going another model back would be the Hunter 376 (37.5ft) from ~1996, and again cheaper, perhaps in your price range, and a very similar layout.

Good luck... but please keep your eyes open... you are talking a fairly good sized boat here... being blunt, it's not the kind of purchase you should be trying to complete in 2weeks... take your time, and get a survey before you hand someone cash.

Ahh of course the zero!! Thanks for that, great advice! Oh you’re right of course, we’re not skimping on surveys but will jump when we find the right boat

You may also want to consider the 356. For that money you'll get a newer boat and hopefully less issues or work to be done.

You might also keep your eyes open for a 386 - they're slightly beyond the top of your price range, but for a cash buyer they might drop the price. Yachtworld has a few for sale in the US right now. You could always make an offer - its no until you ask.
