Anyone replace the steaming light on O'day 25?

The light is out and the wires exiting the bottom of the mast look to be auto type wire.
I figured that while the mast was still down I would replace light and wire. My outboard does have a charging circuit but if I can save 8-10 watts, that will go into charging the battery. Plus LED will last a lot longer.
But thanks for the suggestion. Guess I am asking mostly for a light that is made to fit the curve of a mast. Most seem to be made to fit a flat surface.

Ward, I replaced mine with LED bulbs. Then read some about how, in a bad legal situation, I could be in serious liability for not keeping my lights as they were when approved with the incandescent festoons.

The Hella NaviLed is the one I have been looking at. A little pricey at $120 something compared to the incandescant version for around $25. Trying to decide if LED is worth.
My biggest question though is the flat mounting area on this style light. Do I need a bracket or will it mount OK screwed to the mast?

Ward, I'm not sure. My steaming light is an old Perko (I guess, they used to use Perko stuff.) As I recall, there was a plastic spacer which fitted the curve? Can I even remember when I replaced the bulb before I stepped the mast?
If you think about it, there really shouldn't be anything impinging on the fixture. The leech of the jib should be well forward of the steaming light. You'd need a pretty big genoa to hook on a fixture that high. So, if that's the only thing likely to catch on the fixture, could you just screw into the mast, and have the back of the fixture tangent to the curve of the mast? I think so... On the other hand, if you were quite concerned about it, maybe you could make a sweet base plate/spacer out of mahogany or teak...
I think the first step would be to call and talk to Rudy about it, and then call and talk to Hella about it. See what they say. Honestly, I don't have enough experience to advise. Just a certain amount of legal paranoia now that I've changed out my incandescents with LED, thus altering a system. Theoretically, it works the same as the old system with the incandescent, but if there were a legal challenge (like, I got run over by a drunken powerboater...) then their lawyers would have a field day that I am liable for changing out the incandescents for the LED. Just sayin'...
Not a real big concern on my lake, but stupid that I have to think of this kind of thing anyway...

Your right. The old light does look like maybe the lens/light comes off and a black spacer fits against the mast. I'm hoping I can take the light portion off and use the black spacer. I went with the Aqua Signal 25 Classic light, almost identical to the Hella light. I also went with the incandescent version. As Danny said, it will only be on when the OB is running.
The light is pretty small so if it doesn't fit against the black spacer I will try mounting it directly against the mast.

Sounds like you've got this already, but you can order one of the older style ones and the appropriate pad from Rig Rite (probably elsewhere, too). Scrolling down this page, you'll see it, the one they used originally I believe. This one is listed on the Kenyon 3550 mast, but I think it may be the same for several masts.

CB, I had to replace my 3 pole plug (with only 2 leads, 1 steaming light, no masthead) and I was looking around at my local West Marine. I found a 2 lead plug that looks just like a flat 4 trailer connector. In fact, it may have been called a trailer connector. I wired that in using crimp on, heat shrink adhesive connectors from Harbor Freight. Yes, this would not be up to MaineSails' standards, but it will work fine for my freshwater lake use.

Apparently when I put in the work order to have the mast raised, I mentioned the steaming light needed to be checked. Before I got to the yard they had checked it, replaced the bulb and raised the mast.
Saved me the work and I will install the new light another time.
If this rain clears out for tomorrow I may get the boat launched.

Thanks Brian & Ward for the info. WM has the "flush mount" one like was original but I may take your advice and lengthen everything out.... Have crimp and shrink connectors. Will stop in at WM on Friday and have a look at what they have. Want to get it done quick and get splashed. Thanks again for letting me do a small thread hijack!.
