I'm looking at installing a new vhf system and the Standard horizon GX1850 seams to fit the bill but I would like to know if anyone has used or installed a unit and did it work as to spec.

I bought the GX2200 by SH and find it to be excellent while sailing the Puget Sound and Salish Sea. It even talks Canadian... Regularly hear from Victoria Station CCG (or GCC if you please) that the boats in Haro Strait are having a go of it.

Also have the GX2200 by SH. Works well, the audio is clear and range is good.

Standard Horizon is a well respected electronics company. The company also makes other high frequency radios under other brand names.

Edit: I know John and I didn't specifically answer the question about a particular model. I mentioned the GX2200 to emphasize the quality of the company's products. The GX1850 might be a real dud, however, given SH's reputation, I doubt they would produce an inferior product.

@leo310 the GX1850 looks to have a good feature set.
  • Dual receivers for DSC calls
  • GPS
  • NMEA 2000 and 0183 compatible
Primary difference appears to be the GX2200 includes AIS capability.

Looks to be a solid VHF radio.

I installed and love a Simrad RS35. It was one of a few with a NMEA 2000 connection and reception of AIS. It was plug and play on my network and displays AIS on my MFD very well.
