Has anyone installed a second reef on a H23? Adding a second D ring on the forward part of the sail is easy. Re-tying the reefing line at the aft section of the sail seems somewhat complicated in windy conditions. Anyone added a second reefing line? Sailing my first summer on lake tahoe has been great. Thanks for all the previous suggestions in prepping the boat earlier this spring. Alex H23

2nd Reef?

We haven't done that but when it gets to windy we have reefed the main and then taken the jib down. I was looking at ours and I don't think the line to reef is long enough to reach that without bring the sail part way down. It seems like they could sew a ring or add a grommit there for it. Rob

2nd Reef

I added a second reef a couple of years ago and use it often when crossing over to Vancouver Island during our windy late fall and winter months. I've usually switch to it from the 1st reef when winds get above about 20+ knots. We regularly get gail force winds here. Heaviest wind I've sailed in was 30 knots on my meter. Last January on a solo return, it took a bit over 4 hours to go the 30 nautical miles across Strait of Georgia from Nanaimo on a broad reach. Sustained speeds of over 7 knots with a record of 9.1 knots surfing down the side of a large long 5-6 foot high swell/wave combination. This was with the second reef in the main and the jenoa reefed to about 75% but held out with a wisker pole. Not bad for a 23 footer with a hull speed of 5.9 knots. Cheers, sv Miss Brandy

2nd reef

A number of people here have added a second reef, I have had the work done but only used it one time so dont remember how I used the reef lines, a while ago there was a fairly lengthy thrread on this , if you check the archives I think you will find a lot of info, seems like Mike Epp had the ideal set up if memory serves Me, good luck Mike Bacome,

Davor: You certainly posted a good crossing time for Georgia Strait! I have a question for you: where are the best ramp locations on the North Shore for launching a wing-keel H23? - Kevin.

h23 ramp

Kevin, I do have a trailer but to be honest, have used it only to move the boat to the marina where they use the travel lift. I kept her ready to go at T-bird Marina in West Van. year round since I bought her six years ago. The trailer sits in the parking lot behind my office. Cheers, sv Miss Brandy

Davor: I don't have enough time for sailing either! I am familiar with the T-bird marina. It is one of the places I am thinking about for Ariel. By the way, which bottom paint do you use for this marine environment? I've been told that hauling a boat like ours for 24 hours every couple of weeks is enough to prevent marine growth on the gelcoat hull in the salt chuck around here. - Kevin.

Placement of 2nd Reef

Would anyone with a second reef supply the dimension along the luff from either the foot or the head of the mainsail for the 2nd set of reef points and their horizontal spacing? Please specify make of sail. Thanks. - Kevin.

Boomkicker to replace topping lift

Mike: Could identify the model and type of boomkicker you used to replace your topping lift. Is a boomkicker similar to a rigid boom vang? Would appreciate advice since I will need a second reef. Got caught on Lake tahoe in some 25-30mph gusts this summer! Overpowered with the single reef in. Thanks Alex

boomkicker.com

It's at boomkicker.com they can help you with the size. it is like a rigid vang but has some flex to it. It works great. You still need the vang though to pull the boom down.

Does the mast pump?

Having never experienced situations that made me want a second reef (although more than a few that made me glad for the first one), and given that all three of the masts Hunter provided for the h23 are bendy, has anyone had any problems with the mast pumping under a second reef? If so, what's your recommended solution/ Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Jim has a good point

Jim has a good point about the mast pumping with a second reef. I also have the same concern based upon two considerations. The original sails do not come with a second reef and from a naval architecture viewpoint, a vessel of this size should not be undersail with a second reef (preferably in port, or worse-case scenario: bare poles!). - Kevin.

1. I had North Sails in Richmond add the second reef on their recommendation. Don't know the exact location. Total cost to clean, inspect, restich one batten pocket and add the second reef was about CDN$300 a couple of years ago. I take my sails to them for cleaning and inspection every second year. My main is the original UK sail, while my 150% Genoa is by Kerns. I had the Genoa modified a couple of years ago when I had a Furlex 200 installed. I have never had a need to use the original jib or the Genaker since. A whisker pole does wonders on a wing-on-wing run. 2. Michael Scott Yachts at T-bird does all of my major maintenance, including bottom inspection every year and one coat of Micron CSC Extra every second year. There is a lot of fresh water in Fisherman's cove from Nelson Creek. 3. Annual moorage fee is about CDN$2,400 + taxes. Look them up on the web. Cheers s/v Miss Brandy
