I'm going to be putting an air conditioner on my Hunter 40' and was wondering if anyone has ever installed a genset on theirs. Any information you could provide (the good, the bad, and the ugly) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

genset

Forrest, Put a Fischer Panda on my H410 in the starboard transom locker. It a great genset. Very quiet. We're on a mooring and have used it a lot this summer. Bryce S/V Spellbinder

Tell me More Bryce

I'm envious. I've have considered installing one in the port transom locker on my 376 as the starboard locker is LP. What was the cost of generator and or instalation. Approximately would be wonderful if you please. Thanks1

genset

Mark, Don't remember exactly the costs, but it wasn't the cheapest date on the market. Guess I've never been a cheap date person. Prefer quality. When I looked at the pricing and then added all the extra components to the Kohler etc that Fischer includes as standard. it wasn't a great cost difference. For the fischer a sound sheild, wet and dry exhaust vibration free mounts were all standard. they cost extra on other models. The fischer is quiet. The 16KBTU A/C in my saloon is louder than the genset. And if your in the cockpit you really have to listen to hear the genset. That couple with the five year warranty on both the deisal and the generator made my decision easy. If you have more questions, e-mail me I'm in the directory. Bryce

Seapower super-alternator

I did not install this on my '86 40 but it works very well. At 1200 rpm the Seapower runs all my a/c power including the air conditioner. It looks like a large alternator bolted on to the front of the engine. A small box was cut out under the last step of the companionway ladder. It is virtually unnoticeable unless you are looking for it. At 1200 rpm the yanmar uses about 1/4 to 1/3 gal per hour. The only drawback is it does not generate power at lower rpms so it should be turned off when motoring slowly as in docking. Good Luck!

super alternator

Just attended a Mack Boring seminar at the Mystic rendesvous. The MB rep indicated that running a Yanmar at 1200 RPM for extended periods of time was amongst the quickest way to kill one. 3400 RPM on a 3600 rpm redline could be done all day with no harm, but not 1200 rpm. His comment was something to the extent that its the most expensive battery charger you can get. Bryce

super alt.

BRYCE at the mack boring seminar your right about 1200 rpm , but he also said with no load on it .But the sea power alt he has i belive puts a good heavy load on the engine, the rep said should be okey. PS.I have the northern lights generator with sound shield but not as quiet as the fisher.KEN
